Ebola Precautions

Ebola Precautions at S-DMS
Dear Parents/Guardians of S-DMS Students,
We are implementing precautionary measures against the Ebola virus at our school by following suggestions from the Indiana Department of Education. These suggestions include monitoring student and staff for rates of absences and specific symptoms of illness. These symptoms include fever, fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea. We will continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention website and communicate with the Dearborn County Health Department as needed. Please help keep our illness rate down by reminding your children to cover their coughs, wash their hands frequently, and to keep them home from school if they are ill.
Thank you,
Jennifer Stutts, BSN, RN

Dear Parents and Guardians:
The nurse was informed that there has been one confirmed case of pertussis (whooping cough) in the community. Please watch for signs and symptoms of this disease, such as a prolonged or severe cough. Also, please be aware that whooping cough is dangerous to babies. Additional information is provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) at http://www.cdc.gov/pertussis/about/faqs.html#booster. Consult a doctor if you think you or someone in your family has the symptoms of whooping cough.
There have also been cases of hand, foot , and mouth disease in our community. Please go to the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) website for more information at: http://www.in.gov/isdh/files/2014QuickFact_HFMD3.pdf. Please note that this illness is caused by a virus and, "is spread by direct contact with the secretions from the nose, mouth and throat of an infected person; by direct contact with the fluid from the ulcers and from contact with the stool of an infected person. The virus is most contagious during the first week of illness". Please call the nurse with any questions or to report an illness.
